Please note the arrangements for next Monday's telecon:
*2 PM EDT; MONDAY June 17
*Details about connecting are in Erin's note that follows.
Suggested Agenda:
20 min - Updates from Previous Telecon (same order and time limit)
30 min - Discussion of Rationale for discussing collection structure
to move toward answering some questions:
1. The OAIS RM (ISO 14721:2012) provides a rather extensive
discussion of collection structure. The review I provided in
Chapter 1 of the book chapters last time did not find as
extensive a discussion of collections in some of the other
possible standards to consult (notably FRBR). Because the
RM appears to be widely accepted in the archival community,
it seems sensible to use the RM's structures as a starting
point.
Are there other possibilities?
2. The discussions we had of explorations of collection structure
for the NOAA Emergency Response Imagery collection and
collections of rock cores showed that current Earth science
data collections contain hierarchical or layered collections.
They also showed that Physical Objects in collections may
have more structure than the RM expected. These observations
suggest that we may need to adapt the RM's collection structures
to adapt it to empirical observations of them.
Is it reasonable to adapt the RM to what we find - and if so,
how
do we want to record the structures that seem to be needed?
3. The RM ties the collection structures to an archive's inventory
of objects. As the rationale that's attached suggests, that
kind of tie may be useful in dealing with audits and forensic
investigations, as well as using custodianship to quantify
information about how users actually search for information.
What do we want to do about the RM's suggested ties between
collection structure and the archive's inventory structure? Is
there
a strategy we can come up with to deal with this issue?
10 min - Discussion of strategy for moving forward. Note the suggestion
on the second page of the attachment.
Thanks to Erin for the telecon connection instructions.
