Ruth,

Looking at the page http://smw-rda.esc.rzg.mpg.de/index.php/Special:AllPages that shows a list of terms, and digging a bit, I find that there are nearly 300 terms defined by the RDA group. Clearly, since RDA and CEOS have been working independently, there are differences in definitions and foci in the terminology even when the terms are same or similar. I think it is inevitable that multiple glossaries/vocabularies/ontologies exist. Clearly, the scope of the glossary should be well described to avoid confusion and where there are already established standards, we should follow them as long as they are applicable to the domain of discourse. Since the CEOS WGISS focus at this stage is to identify any important terms that are missing, the RDA set would be a good source to consider. WGISS may take the definitions and particularize them for the Earth observation satellite domain.

Rama.

https://rd-alliance.org/groups/data-foundation-and-terminology-wg.html and https://rd-alliance.org/groups/data-foundations-and-terminology-ig.html are the addresses of the interest and working groups on this topic. They have a semantic wiki at http://smw-rda.esc.rzg.mpg.de/index.php/Main_Page

Ruth,

Since the document was developed by the WGISS of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites, it is not unreasonable for it to be focused on remotes sensing of the Earth. The title of the document indicates this as well. This document has been in work for a while, and has already gone through a round of comments and responses. I am not sure there has been a connection with the RDA Terminology Group. Actually, I am almost certain there has not.

I will pass on your comments about the words in the introduction needing to include remote-sensing, and the work being done in RDA. Could you give me some more particulars about the RDA work in this area such as a link to a document?

Thanks.

Rama.

Hi Rama,

I took a very quick look and the list seems quite comprehensive; but one thing I noticed what that the definitions were very specific to space-based systems; while in many cases the terms have broader applicability. Worse yet, the document introduces itself as applying to "Earth observation data" not "Earth remote-sensing satellite observation data", so the document seems somewhat self-contradictory and could be problematic for folks who are in the Earth observation community but who don't deal with data from above the surface of the earth. Lastly, has any effort been made to make these terms and definitions consistent with the work of the Research Data Alliance Terminology Groups work?

Ruth

All,

I am sending this to you per request from Andy Mitchell. The Data Stewardship Interest Group (DSIG) within the Working Group on Information Systems and Services (WGISS) of the Committee for Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS) has generated the attached document consisting of a glossary of terms related to long-term preservation. They are looking for comments, primarily from the point of view any missing items that are worthy of inclusion. However, I assume that other comments would be welcome as well. The comments are needed by the end of November 2015. I would appreciate your looking them over and sending comments to me before Thanksgiving. I will gather them and pass them on.

I expect that this document, with any updates, will be posted on at a suitable location on NASA's <https://earthdata.nasa.gov/> earthdata web site. We might consider including it as a reference on our committee's wiki once we get the "final" version.

Thanks.

Rama.
