This is great news.

Also…in your deposit with the CSV file, please include a Readme file that follow some basic guidance.  We like to use this from Dryad: https://datadryad.org/stash/best_practices  If you scroll down, there is great guidance for what to include in the Readme.  Also lots of other useful information that is helpful when using general repositories and making sure others understand your work.

And one other thing that is currently vexing me.  When you are considering what to include in a “deposit”, think about how people will use/cite your work.  For instance, do you want your data cited so you can track the usage?  Then place it in its own deposit with a readme.

Or, do you want guidance (document/presentation) along with supporting data and software to be in one “deposit”.  If that is the case, then it will be mixed types of files, but perhaps more useful to your community.   There is no right answer.  Just better answers based on potential usage.

Hi Shelley,

Thank you so much. We are hoping to create DOIs for documents such as our technical methodology as well as for CSV files of our aggregated data and images of maps we have created from our data. I agree that a general repository will work for us; Zenodo seems to be a great fit. I will look into creating a community for FSF and go from there. Thank you again!

It might help to know that a preservation repository that commits to managing a digital object over time (following best practices) are the entities that can register and assign a Digital Object Identifier (DOI).  Depending on what you want to preserve, there are a number of places you can use.

If you are looking for a place to preserve and cite documents or presentations, a general repository is fine.  Here is a comparison chart that is helpful: http://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.3946720
If you have datasets, the selection process needs to be more thoughtful.

I’m guessing you might have documents.  My personal preference is Zenodo.com.  They are a not-for-profit that is well-funded.  Figshare is a for-profit entity.

Zenodo hosts “communities”.  You can create one for FSF where you connect all your digital objects.  See the one I have for my work at AGU as an example:  https://zenodo.org/communities/agu-data-leadership/

To Whom It May Concern,

My name is Marguerite Lally and I work at the First Street Foundation (FSF). My colleague, Ed Kearns, reached out to Susan Shingledecker about creating DOIs through ESIP and she directed us to email this mailing list. FSF is a member of ESIP and we are looking to create DOIs. I know we can create DOIs by paying for a DataCite membership but I was wondering if it was possible for us to work through ESIP or ESIP partners to create DOIs. Susan mentioned that ESIP obtains their DOIs through the ESIP Figshare Repository. I was wondering if we could go directly through Figshare or Zenodo or some other more general repository to create our DOIs.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations for us on what the best path forward is. For reference, First Street would like to create no more than a few hundred DOIs.
