[esip-semantictech] Next ESIP Semantic Technologies Budget

ECITE seems to be a really great solution for ESIP's long-term infrastructure needs! Which begs the question, why hasn't COR moved to ECITE? There is no reason I can imagine to waste our limited resources (which is why Line and I moved the ESIP Semantic Portal from AWS to a server I donated at my university several years ago).
Cheers,
Mike

Hi All -
Semantic Web is currently using about $90/month for the COR.

Just another thought. Does anyone know what the current AWS Compute Resources in the current budget is being spent on? Or is it being spent?
This information would be very useful to help shape the budget for the next FY. As Lewis was asking, may items from last year be re-purposed this year?

Hi Tom and everyone:
Thank you so much for the budget and the explanations. This helps a lot. Any reason as to why 4 was not funded?
At the last teleconference, the suggestion was to put an ontology repository into the budget to at least start a discussion about the possibility of support by ESIP S&T.
It would be useful to develop a plan for deploying and supporting such a repository for ESIP. This plan needs to align with the S&T roadmap and vision, and help the ESIP executive board to make a decision about supporting a repository. It would include infrastructure, such as the AWS resources in the current budget. It could include provision for maintenance and upgrades, support to ontology population and versioning, and customization to earth science ontologies. Evaluation may also be part of this plan as it is already underway.
To provide some background, the initial deployment of the Semantic Portal was supported by the Products and Services Testbed for $7000 in Fall 2012 split between 2 institutions. Development of mappings between ontologies were later supported in Fall 2014 for the same. Much volunteer work went into maintaining the Portal. The Semantic Portal’s currently completed move to the NSF/ESIP ECITE cloud instance, requested by the Committee in June, was supported by volunteer work. No other support was provided for the Semantic Portal as S&T was not a committee.
Let me know if there is interest in the idea of developing such a plan for the ESIP STC. And of course, is this eligible?
Thanks,
Line

Hi Tom,
At the last meeting, someone asked where last years budget wasŠ no one
seemed to know.
Do you know where it is so some of us new comers can get a peek into
format and content?
Off the top of my head, some things which were mentioned were
* there may be nothing wrong with resubmitting/repurposing last years
budget req.
* the Semantic Ontology Implementation/COR/whatever needs to be factored
into the budget
* Bhaskar spoke very encouragingly about putting some kind of
paper/article/journal entry together representing the direction of
semantics within the Earth Sciences. Maybe we could request some budget
resources to drive this work on?
Thanks
Thanks
