Briefly, the CODATA Data Science Journal is an open access journal that focuses on data science and is described in detail at the http://datascience.codata.org/ URL. Since our goal is open & widespread availability, currently what I have in mind is open-access journals.  I have only briefly talked to one of the Springer editors I have worked with before.  Their Springer-Open journals [http://www.springeropen.com/journals] offer a number of choices in informatics, computer science, and Earth sciences.  I am quite sure other viable journals (in the open-access world) exist as well … If anyone has suggestions, we certainly can consider them.

Bhaskar, I entirely agree with your comments.  Articulating the value proposition of these technologies for the Earth Science community fits very well within ESIP’s strategic plan.  What I am not clear about is the kind of document you have in mind: a publication, a white paper, an internal ESIP document, etc…  Maybe it was discussed and I missed it.  Please let us know when you have the chance.

Thanks for your thoughts regarding the roadmap.

Given the fact that a document of this nature has never been published notwithstanding early attempts to build one, I am driven to view this as even more fundamental.  I would like this document to clarify how semantic technologies provide some paradigm-shifting powers that were, until recently, unavailable.  Certainly, an ESIP-driven plan to support an Earth science community ontology portal/repository would consume a good chunk of this roadmap.  But I would like to preface such implementation-level details with an articulation of how exactly such technologies could benefit Earth science.  In the industry, these technologies are constantly being adopted, and are providing the desired benefits.  But, somehow, we are still stymied by gaps in understanding, adoption, implementation, etc.  Hopefully, this roadmap will provide the much-needed information to fill such gaps, and help institute a common or consensus view for Earth science.

I will attempt to get a complete outline finished by Sep 22 for all to review, & in time before our next monthly telecon.

Hi All - Sorry for the double email, one other question came in about whether the budget was competitive or collaborative. This should be a collaborative process to fund things that will support the group and the group should generally agree on the budget before it goes to the Finance committee. From everything I've read on the thread, it sounds like that is what's going on.
