Research as Art Call: Submission Deadline July 2nd
The Call for Entries<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=abeb27fef9&e=ad11bdec1a> is open. You can submit your artwork HERE<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=fe73070ec2&e=ad11bdec1a>. Once again at this year’s ESIP Summer Meeting we'll hold a Research as Art event (on the evening of Wednesday, July 26). Our goal is to encourage the ESIP community to use visual media to communicate their data and research; and to think about their research as an ongoing narrative that can be told through visual media. This event is about showing how the ESIP community uses data. You don’t need to consider yourself an artist in order to submit a piece. The idea is to have a range of entries that show the diversity of research done by members of our community, as well as their creativity and the impact of their work, in an engaging and accessible way.
Registration for the ESIP 2017 Summer Meeting is OPEN
Early registration (through June 30, 2017) is $415 for members and $550 for non-members. After June 30, the registration fee rises to $515 for members and $650 for non-members. The student registration fee is $150 (This does not go up). A special one-day rate is available for $200. A full refund will be given until June 30. No refunds will be issued for canceled registration after June 30. Register here<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=c1e936ec10&e=ad11bdec1a>.

Federation News
Join the PROV Challenge! Don't just think it: share it!
Your idea might change the data world! Do you have a problem with PROV? An idea to make it work better for your data? A notion just on the tip of your hippocampus? Don't just think it: share it! The Community PROV Challenge<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage2.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=20a9c2b90f&e=ad11bdec1a> seeks to explore how community-based provenance and annotation capabilities enhance scientific integrity throughout the data lifecycle. To do this, the USGS has partnered with the ESIP Lab to find creative solutions to PROV challenges.

Help to lead and grow an Earth Science Pre-Print Service
2017 may be the year science pre-prints come of age. While the physics ArXiv has been around for decades, pre-prints are only recently extending across a wide range of science disciplines. It is the right time to consider a pre-print service for the Earth sciences. ESIP is looking to coordinate an effort to build a community-led pre-print service that can span the Earth sciences and provide new publication capabilities for Earth scientists and data professionals.
To Join this effort, HOP ON SLACK<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=19e32f787e&e=ad11bdec1a> and join the earth-sci-preprint channel. Tom Narock tnarock[AT]ndm.edu is the cluster chair.

Call for Subject Matter Experts to Join the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) Governance Panel:
In recent months the ESIP Semantic Technologies Committee has been hard at work transitioning the Semantic Web for Earth and Environmental Terminology (SWEET) suite of ontologies over to their new home at ESIP. SWEET provides an upper-level ontology for knowledge representation across Earth System Science. SWEET is highly modular with ~6000 concepts in ~200 separate ontologies, meaning that it covers a wide variety of domains.
The Semantic Technologies Committee is extending an open invitation to ALL interested parties with a special emphasis on Subject Matter Experts from across the following disciplines
Integrative Topics

  * Natural Phenomena (Macroscale e.g. ecological, physical)
  * Human Activity (commerce, decisions, environment, jurisdiction, research)
  * Data (provenance, formats, modeling, products, services, analysis, geospatial, reduction, validation, processing)
Faceted Topics

  *   Living Substances
  *   Non-Living Substances
  *   Physical Processes (microscale)
  *   Earth Realm
  *   Physical Properties (observation)
  *   Space
  *   Time
  *   Units
  *   Numerics

Geoinformatics-related sessions at the Geological Society of America Annual Meeting
Abstract submissions are open for the GSA Annual Meeting in Seattle, Oct 22-25, 2017, and there is a long list of Geoinformatics-related sessions for your consideration! Abstracts can be submitted from now until August 1, 11:59pm P.D.T.
------- We'd like to mention two sessions in particular -------
T143. Curating Physical Samples in a Digital World
Leslie Hsu, Megan Carter, Anders J. Noren, Lesley A.I. Wyborn
Physical samples, such as cores, fossils, and water, have unique challenges for data stewardship because they are difficult, if not impossible, to fully digitize. We will explore challenges and solutions for digitally curating physical samples.
Invited speakers:

  *   Lindsay Powers, USGS
  * Kerstin Lehnert, Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory, Columbia University
  *   Jens Klump, CSIRO
T147. What Can You Do with Geoinformatics?
Denise J. Hills, Chris Badurek, Christopher Keane, Shelley Stall
Many geoscientists are unfamiliar with geoinformatics, which integrates different disciplines and technologies to enable transformation of data into knowledge for geoscience. Careers in and applications of geoinformatics will be highlighted.

See full list of Geoinformatics-related sessions at this post<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=c5609ea75a&e=ad11bdec1a>. If you are a GSA member, consider joining the Geoinformatics Division<http://esipfed.us2.list-manage1.com/track/click?u=ca50850794ee72b04765ac93c&id=452ba77ae1&e=ad11bdec1a> the next time you renew your membership!
