Lewis,

I assume Ted is referring to the works outlined here:
http://www.geoscienceontology.org/

I've been compiling geoscience ontologies here:
http://www.geoscience-semantics.org/ontologies/
It's still very much in progress, but there are some useful structures
to peruse for potential reuse.
