folks,

There's a silver lining in the clouds from the recent
off-campus parties.

We usually coordinate about 25 community service
projects a year with Duke students. Calls have
recently picked up from students asking to do
community service (as punishment).

As an example, two students are spending three
weekends in a row (30 hours each) doing the following
projects...

* clear litter from RR tracks and embankments between
Broad and Ninth (good time to do it since the leaves
are gone).

* paint fence along Erwin Mills Cemetery and pick up
litter.

* purchase and place mulch in neighborhood's traffic
circles.

All materials will be supplied by the students.

Other groups have also volunteered over the past few
weeks: litter pick-up along RR tracks (9th Street to
Hillandale), Cemetery clean-up (drag out fallen
branches, clear footpath), South Ellerbe Creek
clean-up, weeding the edible gardens at EK Powe,
picking up litter along the length of both
Hillsborough and West Main streets (Durham Academy
students).

As always, Mitch Archer and the City Impact Team have
immediately responded to requests to haul trash bags
to the landfill and underbrush to the chipper.

Photos of volunteer efforts can be seen at...

all best,
