The Unified Development Ordinance (UDO) is the first major overhaul of Durham's development regulations in more than 30 years. The UDO has replaced the previous Zoning and Subdivision Ordinances and works in tandem with the newly adopted Comprehensive Plan to strengthen Durham's development regulations. It was adopted by the City Council and Board of Commissioners on December 5, 2005 with an effective date of January 1, 2006. While we are excited about the UDO's ability to guide development, we also recognize that the document is complicated and represents a significant change from how development was previously regulated.
The Planning Department is sponsoring two workshops to help citizens, property owners and developers understand how the UDO works. Workshop 1 will be oriented toward neighborhood interests and will focus on navigating the document, contextual infill, notification, and the Neighborhood Protection Overlay. Workshop 2 will be oriented toward development interests and will focus on navigating the document, new landscaping requirements, and the development approval processes. Anyone is welcome to attend either workshop or both.
