Clearing Allows For Pipe Cleaning and Repair

Durham, N.C. – To remove overgrowth and provide easy access for
maintenance crews, the City of Durham has begun clearing heavy brush and
removing trees from water and sewer easements throughout Durham.

Easements are areas reserved along water and sewer pipelines that allow
access for pipe cleaning and repair activities.  Routine cleaning and pipe
replacement is essential to prevent deterioration that can cause broken
lines and overflows.  Easements are usually 25 to 30 feet wide and need to
remain clear of trees and brush.

Residents will be notified by the contractor, NaturChem, Inc.,
approximately seven days before clearing begins in their area.  The
notification is typically a door hanger placed on the front door.
Residents that may have inadvertently planted ornamental shrubs or other
landscaping in the easement should consider replanting them outside the
easement area.  The clearing activity is scheduled to continue through
mid-December 2006.

For additional information, residents are encouraged to contact NaturChem,
Inc. using the toll free number listed on the door hanger.  Residents may
also contact the City’s Department of Water Management and speak with Al
Lee at (919) 560-4344 or Jim Harding at (919) 560-4381.
