Telephone books are now being picked up as part of Durham¹s weekly
recycling. An alternative use of old telephone books is to carry one in
your car. It¹ll save you from having to call information from your cell
phone.

Durham also recycles:

Magazines and Catalogs
Mixed Paper (includes basically everything other than cardboard boxes and
things that contained food products.)
Aluminum Cans
Steel Cans
Glass Bottles and Jars
Newspaper
Corrugated Cardboard
White and Colored Office Paper

In 1996, Durham developed a state-mandated Solid Waste Management Plan that
set a waste reduction goal of 10% by 2006. To help attain that goal, the
City Council passed an ordinance in 1997 that requires recycling of "target
recyclables" and makes it unlawful to place them in garbage receptacles. The
ordinance applies to all waste generators - residential, commercial, and
industrial. "Target recyclables" are determined by the Solid Waste
Management Department.
