Most City of Durham Offices Closed for Christmas and New Year’s Holidays

Durham Residents Are Asked to Take Note of Changes in Multiple City Services

Durham, N.C. – Most City of Durham offices will be closed Monday, December
25 and Tuesday, December 26, 2006, as well as Monday, January 1, 2007, in
observance of the Christmas and New Year’s holidays.  Residents are asked
to take note of the following changes in City services:

Solid Waste, Yard Waste and Recycling Curbside Collections

The City’s Department of Solid Waste Management will have no curbside
collection of recycling, yard waste and solid waste on Monday, December
25.  Collection for Monday’s scheduled customers will instead occur on
Wednesday, December 27.  There will be normal curbside collection for
Tuesday’s scheduled customers on Tuesday, December 26.

There will also be no curbside collection of recycling, yard waste and
solid waste on Monday, January 1, 2007.  Collection for Monday’s scheduled
customers will instead occur on Wednesday, January 3. 

Residents are reminded to return garbage, recycling and yard waste
containers back to their home, away from street, curb and sidewalk.  As
traffic increases during the holiday shopping season, motorists are asked
to be aware of collection crews working in neighborhoods and other
high-traffic areas.

refer to the holiday schedule sticker that has been applied to their roll
out cart, visit the City’s Department of Solid Waste Management website at

Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station)

The City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station) will be
closed Saturday, December 23 through Monday, December 25 as well as
Monday, January 1. 

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center

The City's Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center will be closed on
Saturday, December 23 and Saturday, December 30.  It will reopen under its
normal schedule on Saturday, January 6. 

Holiday Tree Collection

The City’s Department of Solid Waste Management will collect holiday trees
for recycling for all Solid Waste customers from January 2 - 31, 2007. 
Trees should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on residents’ normal
household collection day.

Trees taller than six feet should be cut in half.  Residents should also
remove all decorations, including tinsel, lights, garland, and ornaments,
as well as stands, nails, and other hardware.  Residents are also asked to
not place trees in bags.  Trees that have been completely sprayed with
fake snow (“flocked”) will not be recycled, but will be removed by the
City for disposal. 

Holiday trees may also be dropped off at the City’s Waste Disposal &
Recycling Center at 2115 East Club Boulevard, Monday through Friday, 7:30
a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at no charge until
January 31.  Trees delivered after that date will be subject to the usual
disposal fees.

Remember To Recycle

Residents are encouraged to recycle year-round and particularly during the
holiday season when the amounts of trash generated increases. The City’s
Department of Solid Waste Management stands ready to recycle acceptable
holiday waste (non-plastic and metal-coated wrapping papers/ribbons,
cardboard, and gift boxes) curbside and at the City’s recycling drop-off
centers located throughout Durham.  Recyclable items that are specifically
banned from disposal are newspapers, aluminum and steel cans, glass
bottles and jars and corrugated cardboard.  To learn more about recycling

Durham Area Transit Authority

On Monday, December 25, Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) and DATA
ACCESS will not operate.  On Monday, January 1, DATA and DATA ACCESS will
operate on its Sunday/Holiday schedule in which service is provided from
6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  DATA will resume its normal schedule on Sunday,
December 24, Tuesday, December 26, Sunday, December 31 and Tuesday,
January 2.  For more information regarding DATA’s holiday schedule,
citizens may contact (919) 683-DATA.

Durham Parks and Recreation

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) will close all recreation centers on
Sunday, December 24, Monday, December 25, Tuesday, December 26 and Monday,
January 1.  DPR recreation centers will reopen under its normal schedule
on Wednesday, December 27 and Tuesday, January 2.

Durham One Call

The Durham One Call (DOC) business office will be closed on Monday,
December 25, Tuesday, December 26 and Monday, January 1.  However,
citizens may complete an online service request by visiting the City’s
website at http://www.durhamnc.gov/departments/onecall/online_index.cfm or
by leaving a message with DOC’s answering service.  Requests for
assistance left with the answering service during these three days will be
forwarded to DOC on Wednesday, December 27 and Tuesday, January 2.
