The best of my education has come from the public library... my tuition
fee is a bus fare and once in a while, five cents a day for an overdue
book. You don't need to know very much to start with, if you know the
way to the public library. --Lesley Conger

Jan. 5 "First Fridays" Program Features Reyn Bowman
DURHAM-The "First Fridays" program at East Regional Library on Jan. 5
will feature Reyn Bowman, president and CEO of the Durham Convention &
Visitors Bureau. Bowman's presentation is entitled "The Things that
Make Durham Unique." Everyone is invited to attend the free programs,
which begin at 2 p.m. the first Friday of each month at East Regional
Library, 211 Lick Creek Ln. The series is co-sponsored by East Regional
Library and the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Duke University.
Seating for the program, which will be in the library's meeting room, is
limited to 100 people. To reserve a place, please call 560-0203 and
plan to arrive prior to 1:45 p.m. After 1:45, remaining seats will be
filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
Bowman, who has served as president and CEO of the DCVB since 1989, is
also involved in a number of initiatives and committees to attract and
serve visitors to Durham, thereby creating new jobs, generating tax
revenues for local government and improving the business climate. He
serves on the Durham Crime Cabinet, the Parrish Street Advocacy Group
and the boards of the Greater Durham Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown
Durham Marketing Committee and the North Carolina Central University
Hospitality Degree Program. His professional affiliations include a
current three-year term on the Board of Directors for Destination
Marketing Association International.
Bowman has also served two terms as president of the North Carolina
Association of CVBs, was a Presidential delegate to the White House
Conference on Travel & Tourism, has been a member of the North Carolina
Travel & Tourism Board, served as chairman of the Durham Workforce
Development Board, was active on the Cultural Facilities Committee for
the Durham Cultural Master Plan Advisory Board and was president of the
200-member Rotary Club of Durham.
A native of the Yellowstone National Park area of eastern Idaho, Bowman
earned his bachelor's degree in history from Brigham Young University.
The "First Fridays" series continues Feb. 2 with Joy Javits, Performing
Arts coordinator for the Health Arts Network at Duke (HAND).
Co-sponsoring the First Fridays series is one of the many ways Durham
County Library provides the entire community with books, services and
other resources that inform, inspire learning, cultivate understanding
and excite the imagination.
