DUKE PERFORMANCES OFFERS LIMITED COMPLIMENTARY TICKETS TO LEADING
POST-APARTHEID SOUTH AFRICAN DANCE CO.
Association Noa / Company Vincent Mantsoe's "Men-Jaro"
Saturday, March 3 at 8p in Page Auditorium on Duke University's West
Campus
Choreographer/dancer Vincent Mantsoe hails from Soweto, South Africa. His
latest work, “Men-Jaro” (township slang for ‘friendship’), continues his
quest to celebrate and stretch the relationships amongst African dance,
ritual, and music. The piece features an international ensemble of
performers from South Africa, the U.S., Japan, and France, as well as the
music of African composer Anthony Caplan and the African Music Workshop
Ensemble. Last week, Mantsoe brought “Men-Jaro” to NYC and received this
high praise from the New York Times:
Mr. Mantsoe performed a solo of such fierce stamping, writhing intensity
that he appeared to enter into a trancelike state. He was extricated by
another dancer, who gripped him by the shoulders, slowing his ritualized
turns, then supported his sagging body until consciousness seemed to
return. After a while the two began to dance in unison, once again simply
(or not so simply) performers on a stage. In this glimpse of dance as a
direct expression of spiritual connection to something greater than the
physical self, “Men-Jaro” exerted a powerful spell.
