Stream Clean-ups to Precede Free Festival

Durham, N.C. – Triangle residents interested in a day filled with an
eclectic mix of music, a climbing wall, hands-on environmental education
activities and more should mark their calendars for the 2007 Durham Earth
Day Festival. This annual event will be held Saturday, April 21, 2007,
from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Durham in the lot located at Foster and
Hunt Streets.

Children and adults can anticipate enjoying the festival’s environmental
education venue featuring The Scrap Exchange, Schoolhouse of Wonder, the
Museum of Life and Science, giant puppets and more.  Festival goers may
also view the latest “green” vehicle technology and learn what local
groups are doing to protect and enhance Durham’s environment.  This year’s
festival also includes a showerhead exchange, a climbing wall, children’s
activities and more.

In addition, there will be a diverse mix of music with Sahara, Bombadil,
Sajaso and Mosadi Music.  Storyteller Louise Omoto Kessel returns for her
eighth year with the event.  This year will also continue the festival’s
tradition with the Procession of the Species, a parade and celebration of
the environment led by Paperhand Puppet Intervention.

Before the festival gets underway, the City of Durham’s Division of
Stormwater Services will sponsor stream clean-ups from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
in several locations throughout the city.  Durham residents interested in
volunteering should contact Laura Webb Smith, public education coordinator
with the City’s Division of Stormwater Services, at (919) 560-4326 or via
e-mail at laura.smith at durhamnc.gov.

Major sponsors of this year’s event include the City of Durham, Durham
Parks and Recreation, The Herald Sun, WTVD ABC 11, Keep Durham Beautiful,
Inc. and the National Public Radio affiliate WNCU 90.7 FM.

Admission for the festival is free and the event will be held rain or shine.

Durham residents and Triangle visitors interested in learning more about
this event should visit the 2007 Durham Earth Day website at
http://www.durhamearthday.org for more information, including a
performance schedule and a complete list of participants and sponsors.
