Durham residents who want to play a more active role
in their neighborhoods and the community will get a
chance to learn how at this fall's Durham Neighborhood
College, a class designed specifically for residents
to learn about the organization, operations and
services of city and county government. 

Applications are now available for the DNC fall term.
The classes, co-sponsored by the city and county,
consist of interactive sessions run by various local
government officials. 

The application deadline is Aug. 13. All applicants
must be up to date in their vehicle and property tax
payments when applying. 

Classes will be held from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on nine
Thursday nights and on one Saturday morning beginning
Sept. 13. Space is limited to 25 people and
applications will be accepted to create a diverse
participant population from as many Durham
neighborhoods as possible as well as residents living
outside the city limits. 

Students must attend eight of the 10 sessions to
successfully complete the program. 

A light meal will be served prior to each class and
sessions will be held at city and county facilities.
There is a $30 fee to attend the program and five
scholarships are available if needed. Area high school
students ages 15 and up and Hispanic residents are
particularly encouraged to apply. 

Interested residents should fill out and submit an
application at the office of the Durham County Clerk
to the Board of Commissioners, 200 E. Main St.
