PROGRAM: KIDS VOTING-DURHAM

SPEAKER: Carolyn Kreuger Executive Director of Kids Voting Durham

A descriptive handout was distributed

Located in the County Extension Office on Foster Street the offices of Kids Voting is again organizing a curriculum and mock voting process this year in the Durham Public (and a few charter) Schools. KV provide educational materials to both teachers and students to learn the importance of our election process culminating with polling booths at each precinct within Durham. Neighborhood Associations and community groups are encouraged to adopt a Precinct. This involves selecting a Team Captain to coordinate polling booth volunteers and be responsible for setting the Kids Vote station the evening before elections and taking it down after the polls close then delivering the materials (ballots, booth, other materials) to Measurement Inc for processing.

The time commitment for Team Captains varies from 1-2 hours to 2-4 hours for polling station volunteers on Election Day. Training sessions are being coordinated with the typical time needed to become familiar with what’s required to be just around an hour.

Carolyn passed around a volunteer sign-up sheet which when it passed by me had several names of INC participants on it. What a great bunch!

Carolyn recognized Mike Shiflett as a long time volunteer. He related the pleasure and satisfaction he’s experienced with the group and seeing youngsters getting to practice what it’s like voting like their parents do.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Speaker Wanda Boone
Durham County comprehensive report synopsis handout was distributed. Coordination with other resources such as Operation A.P.E., Durham Together for Resilient Youth, Partnership for a Healthy Durham, Durham Try (www.DurhamTRY.org) and Durham Center to address substance abuse problems (alcohol and drugs) in our schools, the community and our neighborhoods affects all of us.
