INC NEWS - Durham does need a change...

For those of you that missed that news17 story, or didn't recognize the
intersection, it was 15-501 at Garrett Rd. Mike Shiflett's concern for the woman
weaving in an out of all the lanes with a bucket, holds water (pardon the
pun!)
Interestingly, as the news 17 folks filmed, behind me was a gentleman on
crutches with one leg doing the same thing! Was amazed he didn't get hit while
they filmed. Of course this is against the law, BECAUSE it's so dangerous.

Ironically he was carrying a sign with just one word on it.... "CHANGE",
which we all seem to agree is needed. Chapel Hill is running a parallel course
that I've just learned about, and I assume they've been around a year in the
crafting as we have in Durham.

Mr Shiflett is quite correct concerning the attempt to ban this practice in
Durham county, that the two approaches are not related, nor mutually
exclusive. But they could work in concert with each other!
If the proposed ban is voted in, and IF any of the problem intersections
were inside the City of Durham, there would be no one in the roadway to give to.
But if we the givers would stop passing money out our car windows, there
might not be any reason to stand on any intersection, inside the city or out.

There is no doubt that the NCDOT needs to do better design work and much
more to improve pedestrian safety. Did you see the Bill Anderson interview?
Did you recognize where the interview was conducted? Do you realize that this
is an intersection where at least one panhandler has been killed? What is a
life worth? In my opinion, the preservation and saving of one life is much
more important than your analogy of safety not holding water.

I must and do agree with Mr. Shiflett. The City Council has also been
proven to be wrong and change a decision on more than one occasion.
