INC NEWS - Jordan lake as Durham's supply

I would like to correct the information regarding Jordan Lake as posted
by Melissa Rooney. The quote from the referenced source is incorrect.
The City of Durham received a 10 million gallon per day allocation of
water from Jordan Lake in 2002. Our long range water supply plan
includes either building an intake at the lake and piping the volume to
one of our existing plants or building an intake and treatment plant
close by. There is also discussion with other local water providers
about sharing these facilities. Until then, we have an arrangement with
the Town of Cary to access OUR allocation via the Cary water treatment
system. We are currently limited to accessing about 1/4 to 1/2 of our
allocation due to the carrying capacity of the infrastructure. And yes,
we can and do supply water to Cary on occasion as needed.

After having some communication about this topic, I
just wanted to clarify something for people (as it was
recently clarified to me):

It is true that, typically, Durham's water supply
comes from Lake Michie and Little River Lake. However
it is not true that Jordan lake does not supply Durham
with water.

It is my understanding that the calculations for the #
of days for which Durham has water, include supplies
from Jordan Lake as our secondary/back-up water
source.

See the following webpage/document by planning
commission chair, George Brine, specifically:

"The City of Durham has a reciprocal agreement with
Cary where-by one municipality will supply water to
the other if needed (e.g., as in case of drought).
Thus, Jordan Lake is a backup water source for the
City of Durham. The DWQ primary classification of the
lake is Water Supply IV (WS-IV)."

See the full context of this quote at the following
link:

Thanks for giving me a chance to clarify this.
Melissa
