Block party only wants residents' best 
Durham News, 3 Nov 2007 

The 2100 block of Englewood Avenue, between Hale
Street and Rosehill Avenue, will host a Chili and
Cornbread Cook-off from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. today.
This is a potluck and street party, so make your
favorite chili or cornbread recipe or side, and bring
a bowl and spoon.

Neighborhood judges and local bands will be on hand.

Photographics are donating 10 percent of today's (Nov
3's) intake to Independent Animal Rescue, in
conjunction with Pet Adoption Day.

>From 10 to noon, adoptable dogs will be available to
meet prospective owners in the parking lot at 806-810
Ninth Street (across from One World), and early
two-legged arrivals get goody bags filled by Ninth
Street merchants.

Got books? Give to school

E.K. Powe Elementary, 913 Ninth St., is collecting
gently used books for its annual Used Book Sale until
Nov. 9.

The books are $.10 for paperback and $.25 for
hardcover. The main objective is to make books
affordable for all.

Bagged or boxed books suitable for toddlers through
grade 5 can be dropped off at the main office. Spanish
books are particularly welcome.

Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association meeting

Ellerbe Creek Watershed Association will hold its
annual meeting from 3:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday,
Nov. 4, at the Broad Street Cafe, 1116 Broad St. Peter
Schubert will provide practical tips on ways you can
conserve water. In addition, there will be a kids'
program at 4:30 p.m. that will focus on butterflies
and other local fauna and flora.
