Clean Energy Durham is seeking a Community Outreach Specialist.
Clean Energy Durham is a newly-formed non-profit organization that promotes energy conservation and the use of renewable energy throughout Durham County. It is pioneering neighborhood-based community outreach and seeks to make Durham a national model regarding energy use. The Community Outreach Specialist promotes energy conservation in low and moderate income neighborhoods in Durham County, with an initial focus on Northeast Central Durham. This position reports to the Executive Director or to the Chair of the Board of Directors until such time as an Executive Director is hired.
Duties and responsibilities:
• Revise an existing household energy survey to specifically target low and moderate income households and oversee surveying.
• Using survey results and personal contacts, identify residents who have experience or interest in energy-conservation measures and who also have a willingness to become a resource for their neighbors.
• Using survey results and personal contacts, identify the types of assistance that residents are seeking regarding reducing their use of energy.
• Coordinate training by professionals for residents in simple energy-saving techniques suitable for renters and households of limited income.
• Design and establish a system for trained residents to share their knowledge about energy use with their neighbors.
• Engage residents in tracking and reporting their household energy use.
• Help residents establish neighborhood energy committees.
• Meet with and make presentations to neighborhood groups and neighborhood residents and solicit ideas and input for achieving the foregoing.
• Identify and supervise college students who will conduct surveying and analysis of survey results.
• Draft reports and make presentations regarding survey and program results.
Required skills, knowledge, and abilities:
• Strong interpersonal skills.
• Familiarity with principles and tools that strengthen community involvement.
• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
• Ability to understand and relate to the needs of members of the community to be served.
• Knowledge of Northeast Central Durham.
• Ability to work independently and exercise initiative, creativity, and resourcefulness.
• Ability to manage multiple tasks, plan effectively, and meet deadlines.
• Ability to provide clear direction to others.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
Minimum education and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
• One year experience in community organizing.
Other requirements:
• Availability to work nights and weekends as necessary.
• Own transportation.
• Own computer and internet connection.
• Ability to speak Spanish a plus.
Salary:
This is a temporary part-time position at 15 hours per week for 6 months, beginning in early December 2007. Base salary is $40,000 per year, prorated. Some benefits provided. There is potential for continuing beyond 6 months if funding can be established by the organization.
