A Look At What's Going On Inside Durham's City Hall

New Episode Begins Airing Friday, December 7 on Time Warner Cable
Channel 8

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the December 3, 2007 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of City Hall This Week. The show will begin airing
on Friday, December 7 at 8 p.m.

City Steps Up Mandatory Water Restrictions

* Modified Stage IV Severe Mandatory Conservation of the City's
Water Conservation ordinance is now in effect. Among the requirements
of the new restrictions: no watering or sprinkling of any lawn, grass,
trees, golf greens or flowers. Businesses that regularly sell plants
will be allowed to use water for irrigation of their commercial stock in
trade, using the minimal amount for survival. Watering of vegetable
gardens or ornamental shrubs is not allowed, except by hand-held
container between 5 a.m. - 8 a.m. OR 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. on Saturdays only.

the City's Web site at www.durhamnc.gov <http://www.durhamnc.gov/> .

Water Main Extension Design Work to Begin

* The City Council approved a $543,000 contract for engineering
design services for two water main extensions to connect with Raleigh's
water distribution system. The interconnections will help both Durham
and Raleigh to maintain their water supply in future emergency
situations. Since it will be about a year before these water main
extensions will be operational, they are not expected to help with the
current drought situation.

Emergency Repairs to Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage Will Soon Get
Underway

* Emergency repairs to the Chapel Hill Street Parking Garage are
expected to be underway by the middle of this month. In light of an
engineering report identifying the potential for structural failure, the
City Council approved a $732,600 contract to have the problems fixed
now. Funds to pay for major repairs to City-owned parking garages were
part of the 2005 bond package and repairs to the Chapel Hill Street
Garage were scheduled for next year. Vehicle weight restrictions are in
effect for levels two through eight of the parking garage.

Durham's Skateboard Park Receives More Funding

* Durham's planned skateboard park will soon move into the
design and construction phases. The City Council approved increasing
funding for the project by $225,000, which will allow the project to
move forward. The skateboard park will be located at Durham's Central
Park.

City Buys Five Additional Buses

* The City Council authorized a grant agreement accepting
$300,000 from the North Carolina Department of Transportation to buy
five buses that can be used if other buses are out of service. The 2003
model buses have had a series of problems that periodically put them out
of service. The new buses will enable the City to continue to offer
reliable bus service even if some of the usual buses are temporarily
unavailable.

City Council Installation

*         Durham's new City Council <http://www.durhamnc.gov/council/>
is now in place. Recently elected Farad Ali
<http://www.durhamnc.gov/council/ali.cfm> and re-elected Eugene Brown
<http://www.durhamnc.gov/council/brown.cfm> , Diane Catotti
<http://www.durhamnc.gov/council/catotti.cfm> , and Mayor William V.
"Bill" Bell <http://www.durhamnc.gov/council/bell.cfm> were sworn in
during an installation ceremony before the December 3 council meeting at
City Hall. City Council meetings are held on the first and third Monday
of the month.
