I was asked by one of my neighbors to forward this to the list. It looked
like a good thing, so here it is.

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine Jeanette Hussey has a son-in-law who is a captain in the
army serving his 2nd or 3rd tour in Iraq. He is responsible for a combat
company of 300+ men. He has lost men and been injured himself. I asked
Jeannette
what items the soldiers might want in a gift box and how to send it. She
told me that the soldiers greatly appreciate such simple things as tooth
paste,
tooth brushes, hand wipes, crystal lite, books, beef jerky, little cans of
sausage or fruit, pencils to give out to the Iraqi kids. There are no shops
or stores to run into when you need something and the army supplies only
very
basic stuff. She said that some soldiers never got anything from home, no
packages, nothing. I asked if she could get some names from her son-in
law of
soldiers who would really appreciate a gift box, i.e. never got any. I got 5
names and was told there are many more soldiers who would appreciate a gift
box. Jennette said her son-in-law can distribute packages to other captains
who have similar men in need.

I bought a bunch of stuff in bulk at Costco and Walmart and packed a box
full. Here's what I put in the box:
a huge summer sausage, 8 packs of gum, 2 bags of pencils, 1 bag of hard
candy and 1 bag of bubble gum, a pack of Mentos, a tube of tooth paste,
toothbrush, deodorant, crystal light, can of ravioli, 5 packaged
brownies, and dental
floss. I included as well as 2 paper back books, two packs of cards and a
pair of scissors from our house. I'm going to stick in a letter and a
picture
of our family. The things in the box cost $28.47 and the box cost $8.95 to
mail totaling $37.42. I am going to send a bunch of boxes and will make an
offer to any of you who would like to send one also

Here's The Deal: If you get me a check for $37.42 I'll get the stuff and
pack it and send a box just like mine in your name with your return
address. If
you include a letter and picture I'll stick those in too. I'll make and
send one batch of boxes out on Dec 16th and another on Jan 6th.

What is so nice to me about this arrangement is that I have the name of a
Captain who will make sure that these packages get to soldiers who are in
need
of a touch from home.

Here is a picture of the box and what I am going to send:

I'm not looking at these particularly as Christmas presents as I don't know
how long it will take to get there. I just thinking they would be
appreciated.

Thanks,
