SHERIFF'S OFFICE INTERNAL AUDIT FINDINGS RELEASED

Durham, N.C. - Durham County Manager Mike Ruffin released an internal
audit of cash handling practices in the Sheriff's Office today.  The
audit was authorized by the County's newly formed Audit Oversight
Committee, and was in response to last year's revelation of missing
funds in the Civil Division of the Sheriff's Office.  Durham County's
Internal Audit Director, Richard Edwards performed the audit.

Ruffin characterized the audit as a candid and thorough assessment of
the department's cash handling practices.  He indicated that Sheriff
Worth Hill has already implemented several of the audit's major
recommendations.  He added, "To his credit, Sheriff Hill has already
segregated duties and changed the way money is being collected and
deposited."

Ruffin also announced that the Sheriff's Office is nearing the
completion of its own internal investigation.  The State Bureau of
Investigation has assisted with the department's internal investigation.
The findings will be forwarded to the District Attorney.  The County has
commissioned a forensic audit.  The results will also be forwarded to
the District Attorney.   Ruffin concluded, "I expect the findings from
both investigations will result additional charges."
