INC NEWS - FW: Opportunity for Public Comment on Transportation Projects

Just a reminder that the elected officials graciously moved the Transportation meeting from its regular morning time to the evening so that folks could come out and testify about what we think of the plans for improving transportation over the next 7 years -- so it would be nice if someone shows up.

There's some good stuff in the plan (more bike racks, for example). The plan itself is VERY BORING reading (it is just a table of projects) so it is hard for me to tell if there is anything to get speak against.

Regards, pat

The Durham-Chapel Hill-Carrboro Metropolitan Planning Organization
(DCHC MPO) programs the state and federal transportation projects in our region
and is developing the FY 2009-2015 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP).
The TIP is a seven-year funding document for bicycle, pedestrian, highway,
rail, and public transportation projects. Every two years, the DCHC MPO
approves its Metropolitan Transportation Improvement Program (MTIP), and the
North Carolina Department of Transportation produces the State Transportation
Improvement Program (STIP).

On January 9, 2008, the Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) released for
public comment the draft MTIP. The draft MTIP is available on the DCHC
MPO website at this link: http://www.dchcmpo.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=54&Itemid=35.
It is also available at the public libraries and planning departments in Durham County,
Orange County
(including Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough), and Chatham County.
The DCHC MPO expects to make changes to the draft MTIP to reflect local
priorities and public comments before approving the final MTIP.

Public comments should be sent to ellen.beckmann at durhamnc.gov
or Ellen Beckmann, Transportation Division, 101 City Hall Plaza, Durham, NC
 27701, by February 13,
2008.

There will be a public hearing
on the draft MTIP at the TAC meeting on Wednesday, February 13, 2008. This meeting will be held at 7pm in the Committee Room on the second floor
of Durham City Hall (101 City Hall Plaza).

The North Carolina Department of Transportation is also holding public
hearings on the draft STIP in February. Two of these meetings are being
held in the DCHC MPO area.

 Wednesday, February
20, 2008, 2pm to 4pm, Southern Human Services Center, Robert and Pearl
Seymour Center, 2551 Homestead Road, Chapel Hill, NC
 Thursday, February
21, 2008, 2pm to 4pm, Durham City Hall, Council Chambers, 101 City Hall
     Plaza, Durham, NC

Please forward this message to any individuals or organizations that
may be interested in providing public comment on the MTIP and STIP.

Thank you,
