Durham, N.C. In recent months, statewide burning bans have varied due to
drought and hazardous forest fire conditions. On February 13, Wib Owen,
director of the North Carolina Division of Forest Resources released a
memo to cancel all burning permits and prohibit all open burning for all
100 counties in North Carolina.
Durham Countys Fire Marshal, Jeff Batten, has also issued a ban
authorized by the Durham County Fire Prevention and Protection Code
Section 16-13 (e) that states, the Fire Marshals Office or the Sheriffs
Department may prohibit any or all bonfires or rubbish fires and other
outdoor fires when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such
fires hazardous.
All burning, no matter how close or far away from an occupied dwelling, is
strictly prohibited in Durham County. This ban, effective at noon today,
will remain in effect until further notice.
For more about this ban, contact the Durham County Office of the Fire
Marshal at 919 560-0660.
