"Conservation Station" Offers Rain Barrels, Showerheads, Bird Boxes, and
Wildflower Seeds March 8
City and County Team Up for Education Event to Help Residents Save Money
and Water
Durham, N.C. - On Saturday, March 8, 2008, Durham residents can learn
how to save money and save water, while promoting a healthy environment
at Durham's "Water - Use It Wisely!" education and sales event.
The Durham Soil & Water Conservation District and the City of Durham's
Department of Water Management will host the event from 9 a.m. to 12
p.m. in the parking lot on the corner of Foster St. and Hunt Ave. in
downtown Durham.
Durham residents can exchange their old, water-wasting showerheads for
free, water-efficient (1.5 gallons/minute) showerheads or purchase one
for $3 (cash only). The Department of Water Management will offer other
free items (such as toilet retrofit items and faucet aerators) to make
homes even more water efficient.
Conservation-minded residents can also pick up pre-ordered rain barrels
for just $90 and start saving money and water by collecting rainwater
year-round to water plants, lawns, or even wash cars. The 65-gallon
capacity rain barrels are made of recycled plastic and are easy to use.
Also, variety of bird boxes and wildflower seeds will be available for
purchase.
Rain barrels are limited, so interested residents should reserve their
barrels or bird boxes by March 6 by e-mailing lmarochak at co.durham.nc.us
or calling (919) 560-0558. Cash or checks made out to the Durham Soil &
Water Conservation District will be accepted for the barrels. Proceeds
from the rain barrel sale will go toward the Durham Soil & Water
Conservation District's environmental education efforts in Durham
County.
For information about this event, contact James Lim, conservation
coordinator with the City's Department of Water Management, at (919)
560-4381 or Jennifer Brooks, watershed conservationist with the Durham
Soil & Water Conservation District, at (919) 560-0558, or visit
www.co.durham.nc.us/departments/swcd/ to view pictures of the items.
