Fast Facts

* The Durham Athletic Park, an anchor of the Durham community since the early 1900s, is undergoing an extensive $5 million restoration. This groundbreaking ceremony will mark the beginning of this restoration process.

* The restoration project will upgrade the infrastructure, restrooms, concessions and seating bowl, while at the same time create picnic areas and concourses that reflect the historic quality of the ballpark. A new state-of-the-art playing field will be installed and maintained by Minor League Baseball professionals. The restoration is scheduled to be complete in December 2008.

* The Durham Athletic Park served as the home of the Durham Bulls Minor League Baseball team from 1926 until 1994. Since 1995, the ballpark has been used by the community as a venue for local baseball and softball leagues and serves as the home field for the North Carolina School of the Arts. It is also used for concerts and festivals, such as the Bimbé Cultural Arts Festival, Bull Durham Blues Festival and the World Beer Festival. North Carolina Central University (NCCU) will make this ballpark their home field beginning with their 2009 season.

* Ceremony participants include Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell; City Manager Patrick Baker; President & Chief Executive Officer Pat O'Conner with Minor League Baseball; Chancellor Charles Nelms with NCCU; and President & Chief Executive Officer James Goodmon of Capitol Broadcasting Company, parent company of the Durham Bulls. The event will conclude with a special performance by the NCCU band.

* Durham residents and local news media are invited to attend this event. There will be a reserved area for television and radio news media along with access to a mult box.

* For on-site media assistance, contact Amy Blalock, senior public affairs specialist with the City's Office of Public Affairs, at (919) 475-7735 (cell).
