INC NEWS - Awards for Lakewood Elementary School Leaders

Community Members,

It has been a while since I have communicated with you all regarding our
treasured Lakewood YMCA.  This week marks the first anniversary of the
efforts of the Committee to Save the Lakewood YMCA to preserve this
cornerstone of the Lakewood Community.  And I'm sure you have all heard the
incredible news that Durham County plans to purchase the facility, convert
the majority of it to a Montessori Middle School, and lease back the
remainder to the YMCA which will continue a presence there for at least the
next 15 years!  This is just a tremendous outcome and a better resolution
than any of us on the CSLY board could have dreamed of.

With this good news in mind I wanted to share with you the joyful conclusion
of the efforts of the Lakewood Elementary School children's participation in
the grassroots campaign to save the Lakewood YMCA.  Please read below the
summary of the end of year celebration at Lakewood Elementary and join me in
praising these brave, strong, civic-minded Durham citizens and Lakewood
community members in translating their passion for the Lakewood YMCA into
action that truly made a difference in that institution's destiny!!!

   Hello Lakewood Y Community:

As you know, the Committee to Save the Lakewood YMCA wanted to recognize the
Lakewood Elementary students who joined our effort.  I thought you might
like to hear about what we did. We prepared hand-made certificates for each
child—a Citizenship Award with colored stars and rainbows, and each child's
name written in script. As chair of the board, Chuck Clifton signed each
certificate. We presented the awards to the fourth-grade students at their
Awards Day last Thursday. We presented the fifth-grade students with their
awards at their graduation ceremony today.

On Thursday, Jon Ward delivered the Committee's statement thanking the
students and recognizing their achievement.  (Chuck is out of town for a
week.) Carol Sterne, Ethel Simonetti, and Hart Pillow handed out the
certificates as I called each child's name. The applause was uproarious.

Today, Dexter Richardson led us in recognizing the children's
accomplishments, pointing out the significant role they played in the
positive outcome we achieved together. County Commissioner Becky Heron
joined us and contributed her own words of praise. She noted that although
she does have a little time left to serve as County Commissioner, in the
future she hopes to see some of these young leaders on the Board of
Commissioners themselves.  Becky Heron and Ethel Simonetti handed out the
certificates. Afterward, the Lakewood Y Leaders all stood on the stage
together, holding their certificates, as their principal,  Elizabeth
Shearer, spoke to them and the other members of the fifth grade, followed by
a final round of applause. It was quite a ceremony.

We're glad we were able to recognize both the fourth and the fifth graders.
And we're grateful to their teachers, Libby Montagne and Janine Gomez, for
getting us onto the two programs and helping each ceremony go smoothly. This
was a very satisfying way to thank our young partners for all they did to
help us save the Lakewood YMCA.
