GOOD MUSIC IS HAPPENING IN DURHAM!

This week on Thursday and Saturday evenings, join Durham Parks and Recreation for free music on the CCB Plaza (corner of Corcoran and Parrish Streets in downtown Durham)

Future Kings of Nowhere
The Savage Knights
Thursday, August 21, 5:30-7:30 p.m.

Acousticore, jazz

Brimming with wit and energy, The Future Kings of Nowhere play acoustic pop-punk antifolk with an occasional bit of country twang. They call it acousticore. High speed acoustic guitars, double-time drumming, lush harmonies, and a slew of auxiliary instruments create a frantic backdrop for these songs of love, death and modern-day alienation. They sing with a disarming honesty that draws you in and a beat that keeps you moving. The hooks sink deep and the energy is unforgettable. One listen to their debut CD, released on 307 Knox Records, and you will be humming these tunes for weeks.

The Savage Knights make instrumental music with weird intensity. Their music varies stylistically from straight chord-change jazz to heavy-metal-jazz to Ornette-like head-improv-head to obsessive krautrock rhythms to punk-R&B to whatever else they feel like.

Kirk Keyes

D.P.I

Saturday, August 23, 5:30-7:30 p.m.
Jazz

As a disciple of the new order of today's musical talents, Kirk Keyes is by no means your average instrumental virtuoso. Kirk has evolved from being just an artist into a well-seasoned entertainer who composes, arranges, produces and performs. He is a fresh young talent that has captured the hearts of many. He is well-versed in soprano, alto, and tenor sax, as well as piano. The Kirk Keyes sound consists of innovative, 'Next Generation R&B'. This particular form of R&B is entwined with hip-hop culture sautéed over hard core jazz roots. Kirk's creative talent brings a whole new flavor to today's urban contemporary scene.

D.P.I. (Divine Praise Intervention) are the new kids on the block of the Triangle music scene! Their music is an exciting combination of gospel jazz/fusion/R&B. Their song list includes some oldies and some original pieces. Their influences are Dave Weckl and Chick Corea, Earth, Wind, and Fire and jazz greats such as Oscar Peterson and Kim Waters. D.P.I. is composed of a bass player, keyboard, saxophone, and drums, the perfect combination that will bring about a musical oasis for all to enjoy.
