Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the August 18, 2008 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Monday, August 25 at 1:30 p.m. on Time Warner Cable Channel 8.
Meet Durham's New City Manager
* Thomas Bonfield shares more about himself and his goals for
the City in his first weeks as Durham's new City Manager on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."
Vote on Ninth Street Plan Put on Hold
* The Ninth Street area of Durham will have to wait longer for a
new plan aimed at helping to shape its future growth and development.
After hearing input from the public, the City Council decided to
continue its hearing on the plan in order to allow additional time for
all stakeholders to reach more of an agreement on key details. City
staff and residents say the plan is needed to address future development
and transportation concerns while preserving the unique character of the
neighborhood. Aaron Cain, senior planner with the Durham City-County
Planning Department, explains how the plan will help to address those
challenges on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."
Construction Set to Begin on Pedestrian Bridge Over Durham Freeway
* The City Council authorized the City Manager to execute a
Supplemental Agreement between the North Carolina Department of
Transportation (NCDOT) and the City of Durham to allow the City to
provide a 20 percent match, or $200,000, toward the removal and
replacement of the existing pedestrian bridge crossing over the Durham
Freeway at Alston Avenue. The original bridge was built by the NCDOT as
part of the original Durham Freeway Project to link neighborhoods that
were separated by the freeway. The bridge was closed because of safety
concerns. The design for the new bridge has been completed and the
project is ready to be bid for construction. Katie Kalb, director of
the City's Department of Public Works, explains what the new bridge will
look like and how it will better serve surrounding communities on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."
Work on the American Tobacco Trail's Pedestrian Bridge Over I-40 Moves
Ahead
* The City Council authorized the City Manager to contract
$1,650,000 for the design and construction administration of Phase E of
the American Tobacco Trail. This final phase of the trail in Durham
County includes the bridge and four miles of greenway trail between
Highway 54 and the Chatham County line. The design for the bridge will
be developed once the public input phase of the project is complete.
This phase of the trail is expected to be finished by the summer of
2010.
Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":
* Stacey Poston, Acting ADA Coordinator, Department of General
Services - Explains how residents can use new Browsealoud software to
access City information and services they need.
* Jim Harding, Civil Engineer IV, Department of Water Management
- Demonstrates how the City will save time and money to repair
deteriorated sewer mains and manholes throughout Durham.
* Constance Stancil, Director, Department of Neighborhood
Improvement Services - Explains why all of Durham would benefit from a
non-residential building code.
