Fast Facts

· The mission of this annual conference is to increase awareness and understanding on a wide array of topics affecting Latino residents, such as DWI consequences, fair housing rights, home purchasing guidance, English as a Second Language (ESL) Program available in Durham Public Schools, Durham Parks and Recreation Programs, venereal disease information and prevention tips, immigration law update, and services provided by El Centro Hispano. Entertainment will also be provided by Takiri Academy, a dance troupe that specializes in Hispanic folkloric dance.

· According to Yvonne Peña, director of the City's Department of Human Relations, while the event will be conducted in Spanish, all residents of Durham are invited to attend. "Many of the topics that we'll be discussing are beneficial for all residents, not just our Latino community members," Peña said.

· Ricardo Perez, human relations commissioner for the City of Raleigh and a community multicultural advocate, will present the keynote address. Perez brings more than 15 years of experience and plans to tailor his remarks to help raise awareness on issues of individual responsibilities and rights when living in the United States.

· For more information about this event, contact Peña at (919) 560-4107 or via e-mail at yvonne.pena at durhamnc.gov.
