Most City of Durham Offices Closed for Christmas and New Year's Holidays

Durham Residents Asked to Note Changes in Multiple City Services

 

Durham, N.C. - Most City of Durham offices will be closed Wednesday,
December 24, Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26, and Thursday,
January 1.  Citizens are asked to take note of the following changes in
City services.

 

Recycling, Yard Waste, Solid Waste, and White Goods Curbside Collections

The City's Department of Solid Waste Management will have no curbside
collection of recycling, yard waste, solid waste, or white goods on
Thursday, December 25.  Thursday collections for solid waste, yard
waste, and recycling will take place on Wednesday, December 24.  Friday
recycling collections will occur as usual on Friday, December 26.
Friday solid waste and yard waste collections will take place on
Saturday, December 27.

 

There will also be no curbside collection of recycling, yard waste,
solid waste, or white goods on Thursday, January 1.  All Thursday
collection services will occur instead on Wednesday, December 31.

 

Residents should place their carts and/or white goods at the curb by 7
a.m. the day of their scheduled pick up.  Residents are also reminded to
return garbage, recycling, and yard waste containers back to their home,
away from street, curb, and sidewalk.  As traffic increases during the
holiday shopping season, motorists are asked to be aware of collection
crews working in neighborhoods and other high-traffic areas.  

 

Waste Disposal and Recycling Center

The City's Waste Disposal and Recycling Center (Transfer Station) will
be closed on Thursday, December 25, Friday, December 26, and Thursday,
January 1.  The Waste Disposal and Recycling Center will be open during
extended operating hours on Saturday, December 27 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.
and open during normal operating hours on Wednesday, December 31.

 

Household Hazardous Waste Collection Center

The City's Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Center will be
closed Wednesday, December 24, Thursday, December 25, Friday, December
26, and Thursday, January 1.  The HHW Center will be open during normal
operating hours on Saturday, December 27 and Wednesday, December 31.

 

Holiday Tree Collection 

The City's Department of Solid Waste Management will collect Christmas
trees for recycling for all Solid Waste customers from January 5-30,
2009.  Trees should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on residents' normal
household collection day.  Trees taller than six feet should be cut in
half.  Residents should also remove all decorations, including tinsel,
lights, garland, and ornaments, as well as stands, nails, and other
hardware.  Residents are also asked to not place trees in bags. 

 

Christmas trees may also be dropped off at the City's Waste Disposal &
Recycling Center at 2115 East Club Boulevard, Monday through Friday,
7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 12 p.m., at no charge
until January 30.  Customers are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes
before closing.  Trees delivered after that date will be subject to the
usual disposal fees.

 

Remember To Recycle

Residents are encouraged to recycle year-round and particularly during
the holiday season when the amounts of trash generated increases. The
City's Department of Solid Waste Management stands ready to recycle
acceptable holiday waste (non-plastic and metal-coated wrapping
papers/ribbons, cardboard, and gift boxes) curbside and at the City's
recycling drop-off centers located throughout Durham.  Recyclable items
that are specifically banned from disposal are newspapers, aluminum and
steel cans, glass bottles and jars and corrugated cardboard.  To learn

Durham Area Transit Authority

On Thursday, December 25, Durham Area Transit Authority (DATA) and
ACCESS will not operate.  On Wednesday, December 24 and Wednesday,
December 31, DATA and ACCESS will operate under its normal schedule
until 7:30 p.m.  On Thursday, January 1, DATA and ACCESS will operate
under its Sunday/Holiday schedule, in which service is provided from
6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.  DATA's administration office will be closed on
December 24, 25, and 26 as well as January 1.  For more information,

Durham Parks and Recreation

Durham Parks and Recreation (DPR) will close its administrative office,
centers, and indoor pool facilities on Wednesday, December 24, Thursday,
December 25, Friday, December 26, and Thursday, January 1.  Also, all
centers and indoor pool facilities will close early on Wednesday,
December 31 at 6 p.m.  DPR's recreation facilities and indoor pool
facilities will be open under their normal operating hours Saturday,
December 27 through Tuesday, December 30 and Friday, January 2.  DPR's
administration office will be open under their normal operating hours
from Monday, December 29 through Wednesday, December 31 and Friday,
January 2.

 

Durham One Call

Durham One Call will be closed on Wednesday, December 24, Thursday,
December 25, Friday, December 26, and Thursday, January 1.  However,
residents may complete an online service request by visiting the City's
Web site at www.durhamnc.gov/departments/onecall or by leaving a message
with Durham One Call's answering service.  Requests for City services
left with the answering service or via the online service request form
on December 24, 25, and 26 will be forwarded to Durham One Call on
Monday, December 29 and requests for City services on January 1 will be
forwarded to Durham One Call on Friday, January 2.
