Durham Hosts Neighborhood Streetscape Design Meetings

City Seeks Input on Third Draft of Conceptual Designs for Five
Neighborhood Commercial Corridors

Durham, N.C. - Durham residents who participated in neighborhood
meetings to provide input on how the streetscapes in five neighborhood
commercial corridors should appear will soon have another chance to
review and provide further input on the initial design concepts.

The City of Durham's Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD)
and the Department of Public Works are hosting a third round of
community meetings to continue the planning process for new streetscape
designs in five neighborhood areas. This meeting will reveal draft
streetscape design concepts to the neighborhoods, show what direction
the project is moving toward, and seek additional input from residents
and other stakeholders.

The project, funded by 2005 bond funds, will address streetscape designs
for Fayetteville Street between N.C. Highway 147 and Homeland Avenue;
East Main Street between Hood Street and Alston Avenue; the intersection
of Angier Avenue and Driver Street; the intersection of North Mangum
Street and Corporation Street; and West Chapel Hill Street between Kent
Street and N.C. Highway 147.

Five community meetings to showcase the design concepts are scheduled as
follows:

Hayti Heritage Center, 804 Old Fayetteville Street, Durham

Monday, January 26, 2009, at 6 p.m.

North Mangum Street and Corporation Street Intersection Project

Tuesday, January 27, 2009, at 6 p.m.

Monday, February 2, 2009, at 6 p.m.

West Chapel Hill Street Project

Community Family Life & Recreation Center at Lyon Park, 1309 Halley
Street, Durham

Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at 6 p.m.

Angier Avenue and Driver Street Intersection Project

Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at 6 p.m.

The City is continuing to work with consultants from EG&G, Inc. to
develop the schematic designs for the projects. Initial meetings were
conducted in April, September, and October 2008 with residents,
businesses, and other stakeholders in each streetscape project area to
gather input and provide opportunities to help determine the streetscape
design.
