Just want to bring your attention to the February "Because We're Still Here (and Moving" performances -- I went last year and it was truly eye-opening. I think every middle-school through high-school student should see it. I went by myself and can say it was marvelous adult educational entertainment as well.

The performances are Feb 13-17 (see below/attached) at the Kenan Theatre, UNC-CH. Walking tours are Feb 6 and Feb 20.

This show is an excellent showcase of the history of African Americans in Chapel Hill and Carrboro (from slavery-times 'till now).

The program/pamphlet provides you with a walking map of Carrboro and Chapel Hill, detailing the locations of many black businesses and landmarks within walking distance of the performance.

After taking the self-guided walking tour, I finished up with a big lunch at Mama Dips (marked on the map), where Mama Dip herself was managing her historic business from a bench near the front door.

Hope you will consider attending -- and bringing your middle- through high- school kids with you!

Melissa

Whereas, Black History is a living and foundational part of our community that informs our citizens’ engagement with the past, present and future; and whereas, residents from Pottersfield to Windy Hill have built successful communities spanning generations, breaking down barriers of knowledge, sustainability and access, and creating lasting cultural, economic, spiritual and historical impact . . .

So begins the joint proclamation from the towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro celebrating the first Because We’re Still Here (and Moving) Month!  The timing of this project with the new presidency is inspiring for us all.  Come help local residents, students, artists, and performers bring to life 150 years of stories, histories, maps, images, and music as we map a world of Black History in Our Own Backyard.  The culmination of three years of research,
this community-based project explores the dynamic relationship between local African-American neighborhoods, the oldest state university in the country, and the inevitable development that is altering it all.
