A Look At What's Going On Inside Durham's City Hall

New Episode Begins Airing Monday, February 9 on Time Warner Cable
Channel 8

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the February 2, 2009 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Monday, February 9 at 1:30 p.m.

Decision on Keeping Hens Postponed Two Weeks

* The City Council postponed a decision on whether to allow
residents within the City limits to keep hens in their yards. Council
members are considering a proposed amendment to the Unified Development
Ordinance that would allow a limited number of female chickens to be
kept for personal use. The proposed amendment is in response to a
growing interest in local, non-industrial food supplies and rising food
prices.

Funding Approved for Affordable Housing for People with Special Needs

* The City Council approved using $500,000 in budgeted general
funds and $160,486 in federal housing funds to help support affordable
housing for people with special needs. Community Alternatives for
Supportive Abodes (CASA) will use the money to buy and renovate Vesson
Court - a property located at 2420 Vesson Avenue. Mary Jean Seyda,
director of Operations for CASA, explains why this project is needed and
how it will benefit residents and the surrounding community alike on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Additional Affordable Housing to be Built in Northeast Central Durham

* As part of the ongoing effort to provide homeownership
opportunities through the Hope VI redevelopment project, the City is
supporting the construction of more affordable housing units in
Northeast Central Durham. The units will be located within the Franklin
Village property located at the corner of Holman and Taylor Streets.
The City Council approved using $450,000 in federal housing funds for
the Metropolitan Housing and Community Development Corporation to build
up to 10 homeownership units within the development. Brian Crawford,
project attorney for Metropolitan Housing and CDC, Inc., explains who
will benefit from that project on the upcoming episode of "City Hall
This Week."

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

*         Melinda Squires-Nelson, non-city agency coordinator and
non-corporate budget analyst, Budget and Management Services Department
- explains what the Non-City Agency Grant Program is and which
organizations can benefit from it in the coming year.

* Cynthia Mebane-Watts, community relations coordinator,
Neighborhood Improvement Services Department - explains what the Durham
Homeownership and Foreclosure Expo is and how it could help you.

* Peter Skillern, executive director, Community Reinvestment
Association of North Carolina - explains what the Earned Income Tax
Credit is and why it could mean more money in your pocket.
