Durham's "Ellerbe Creek Week" April 4-11
Events Designed to Address Creek's Persistent Litter Problem
Durham, N.C. - Durham residents interested in cleaning up the persistent
litter problem in Ellerbe Creek should mark their calendars now to
volunteer during "Ellerbe Creek Week."
Scheduled for the week of April 4-11, 2009, Ellerbe Creek Week is being
sponsored by a coalition of local agencies with an interest in
protecting Ellerbe Creek. Spearheaded by the City of Durham's
Stormwater Services Division with the Department of Public Works, this
week-long event is designed to tackle the creek's recurring litter
problem.
The volunteer opportunities available will specifically address the
large volume of trash that originates in the city and travels through
the storm drain system to the creek where it then accumulates at the
mouth of the creek near Falls Lake. Ellerbe Creek Week will feature
labeling storm drains with clean water messages on April 4 and a stream
clean-up on April 11. In addition, activities are planned throughout
the week to educate residents about Ellerbe Creek's natural areas and
pollution threats.
The Ellerbe Creek Coalition consists of the Ellerbe Creek Watershed
Association, Durham County General Services Department, Frog Hollow
Outdoors, City of Durham Stormwater Services Division, Durham Parks and
Recreation, Keep Durham Beautiful, and individual citizens.
Ellerbe Creek flows more than 20 miles through Durham before it joins
the Neuse River at Falls Lake. Areas of Durham within the Ellerbe Creek
watershed include Downtown Durham; Duke East Campus; Northgate Mall;
Bennett Place; Durham Regional Hospital; Duke Park Neighborhood;
Northgate Park Neighborhood; and the old Durham landfill.
To volunteer or learn more about the week's events and educational
opportunities, contact Laura Smith, public education coordinator with
the City's Stormwater Services Division, at (919) 560-4326, extension
