Durham Hosts Youth Job Fair April 17

Summer Employment Opportunities Available for Ages 14-21

 

What:              Mayor's Annual Summer Youth Work Program Job Fair

 

Who:               Mayor William V. "Bill" Bell and the City of Durham's
Office on Youth and Office of Economic and Workforce Development

 

When:             Friday, April 17, 2009

                  Ages 14 - 15:  9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Ages 16 - 21:  1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

 

Where:            Durham Armory

220 Foster Street (corner of Foster and Morgan Streets)

Durham, N.C. 27701

 

Fast Facts

*         The Mayor's Summer Youth Work Program offers Durham youth the
opportunity to gain work experience and develop skills while connecting
with City and County governments.

 

*         Approximately 400 summer employment opportunities will be
available this year.  Two sessions will be conducted as follows:

o   Ages 14 - 15:  9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

o   Ages 16 - 21:  1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

 

*         Potential applicants may visit the City's Web site at 
www.durhamnc.gov/mayor/youth_program.cfm to download an application as
well as review the job listings and criteria needed to ensure
eligibility for each position.  There will also be an interview process.
Participants will begin work on Monday, June 16 and work until Friday,
August 15.

 

*         Some of the partnering public organizations and private sector
companies with job opportunities are the City's Office of Economic and
Workforce Development, Durham Parks & Recreation (DPR), Department of
Neighborhood Improvement Services, Department of General Services,
Durham Fire Department, Durham County Government, Department of Social
Services, Chic-Fil-A at Hillsborough Road, and Youth Empowered for
Success.  Other partners include Capital Broadcasting at the Historic
American Tobacco Campus and North Carolina Central University.

 

*         Businesses interested in participating in this Friday's Summer
Youth Work Program Job Fair or in hiring youth for summer employment
should contact Kim Moss, assistant youth services coordinator with the
City's Office on Youth, at (919) 560-1266 or via e-mail at
