Durham's Junior Fire Marshals Graduate Thursday

Former Junior Fire Marshals and the News Media Are Invited to Attend
Tomorrow's Graduation Ceremony

 

Durham, N.C. - The next generation of potential Durham firefighters will
soon graduate from the 5th Annual Junior Fire Marshal Program.

 

Hosted by the City of Durham Fire Department (DFD), Durham Parks and
Recreation (DPR), and the North Carolina Office of the State Fire
Marshal (NCOSFM), the graduation ceremony for 29 youth who participated
in this year's program will take place Thursday, April 16, 2009, at 6:30
p.m. at the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon Park,
located at 1309 Halley Street, Durham.

 

Each year during spring break, this free program offers Durham youth
ages 11 to 17 the opportunity to explore careers in the fire service and
provides character building and personal development through field trips
and team-building exercises.  Over the course of the week-long program,
these youth received fire extinguisher training, hazardous materials and
fire rescue demonstrations, emergency medical service blood pressure
screening demonstrations, and took a tour of the Governor's Mansion.

 

According to Kenneth Crews, fire marshal for the DFD, the life lessons
and mentoring these youth receive during this program doesn't end at the
graduation ceremony.  "With each passing year that we host this program,
it keeps getting better and better for our youth," Crews said.  "One
thing we take pride in is that our involvement with these youth doesn't
just end with the graduation.  We stay in touch them to make sure they
remember the important lessons they received during this program that
are necessary to succeed in life."  

 

All past junior fire marshals, as well as the news media, are invited to
attend this year's graduation.  Interested candidates for next year's
program may download an application on the City's Web site at 
www.durhamnc.gov/departments/fire/marshal_jr.cfm or pick up an
application at the Community Family Life and Recreation Center at Lyon
Park.
