Durham To Recognize Businesses for Outstanding Environmental Stewardship
at Earth Day

Festival Provides an Opportunity for Durham to Promote the Benefits of
Green Business Practices

Durham, N.C. - The City of Durham's Earth Day Festival has added a new
event this year to recognize Durham businesses for outstanding
environmental stewardship.

During the opening ceremony on Saturday, April 25, Mayor William V.
"Bill" Bell will recognize the Durham Ritz Car Wash and the Washington
Duke Inn & Golf Club for their outstanding efforts to conserve water and
reduce waste.

Both the Durham Ritz Car Wash and Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club
participate in Durham's EnviroStars Program, designed to assist and
recognize businesses that go above and beyond in reducing the solid
waste they produce, conserving water, and protecting the quality of
Durham's local rivers and streams.

The Durham Ritz Car Wash is being recognized for reducing the amount of
water it uses to only 18 gallons of water per vehicle, which is only 10
percent of the water used by the average home car washer. This business
also collects rain water to meet its landscaping needs.

The Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club is being recognized for implementing
a program that dramatically reduces the waste it sends to the landfill
through recycling and composting in addition to purchasing
environmentally friendly products, from cleaning supplies to CFL light
bulbs, whenever possible.
