Durham 911 Center Undergoes On-Site Accreditation Assessment May 10-13
Public Input Encouraged on May 11 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.
Durham, N.C. - The Durham Emergency Communications Center (DECC) is
scheduled for an on-site assessment from May 10 - May 13, 2009, as part
of a program to achieve accreditation by verifying it meets professional
standards.
Administered by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement
Agencies, Inc. (CALEA), the accreditation program requires agencies to
comply with state-of-the-art standards in four basic areas: policy and
procedure, administration, operations, and support services. Some
examples of the requirements a communications center must meet in order
to achieve CALEA accreditation includes a comprehensive, uniform set of
written directives in addition to a preparedness program to address
natural or man-made unusual occurrences.
According to James Soukup, director of the DECC, achieving the CALEA
accreditation will enhance his center's ability to provide overall
public services in all aspects of communications. "CALEA accreditation
strengthens an agency's accountability, both within the agency and the
community, through a continuum of standards that clearly define
authority, performance, and responsibilities," Soukup said.
Agency employees and the public are invited to offer comments by calling
(919) 560-4594 on Monday, May 11, 2009, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m.
Comments will be taken by the Assessment Team and should be limited to
10 minutes and must address the agency's ability to comply with CALEA's
standards. A copy of the standards is available at the Durham Emergency
Communications Center, 505 W. Chapel Hill Street, Durham. Local contact
is Accreditation Manager Charles Brown, II at (919) 560-4798.
Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the Durham Emergency
Communications Center's ability to comply with the standards for
accreditation should send them to the Commission on Accreditation for
Law Enforcement, Inc. (CALEA), 10302 Eaton Place, Suite 100, Fairfax,
VA, 22030, to the attention of Christie L. Goddard. For more
information about CALEA, visit www.calea.org.
