City Manager Unveils Proposed $344.4 Million FY 2009-2010 Budget

* Durham City Manager Tom Bonfield's proposed $344.4 million FY
2009-2010 budget offers a stark reflection of the current challenging
economic climate. In order to develop a balanced budget and meet the
City's priorities without raising taxes, 113 City positions will be
eliminated next year and minimal increases in some fees are proposed.
Next year's budget represents a 3.1 percent decrease from this year's
adopted budget. Bonfield explains how next year's proposed budget could
impact Durham residents on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This
Week."

City Council Approves Water and Sewer Rates for FY 2009-2010

* The City Council approved a new water and sewer rate structure
for FY 2009-2010 that includes no increase for water and sewer service
charges, for the sewer volume rate, or for the Tier 1 rate. The new
water rates do include modest increases in Tiers 2-5. Those rates will
be implemented in the August and September billings. Don Greeley,
director of the City's Department of Water Management, explains why the
rate increases are needed and how you may be affected on the upcoming
episode of "City Hall This Week."

American Recovery and Reinvestment Act Funds to Help Workers in Durham

* The City of Durham will be receiving $1,317,711 in American
Recovery and Reinvestment Act funds to support the Durham Employment and
Training Grant Project. The money will benefit for-profit and
not-for-profit businesses, governmental agencies, and will be used to
help adult, dislocated workers, and the City's youth find jobs. Kevin
Dick, interim director of the City's Office of Economic and Workforce
Development, explains how the funds will be used to benefit these groups
on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Study to Examine Transportation Issues in NC 54/I-40 Corridor

* The City Council approved a $257,433 contract for a
transportation study of the NC 54/I-40 corridor. The purpose of the
study will be to analyze short-term and long-term land use issues and
transportation problems, evaluate opportunities and challenges, and
recommend short and long-range solutions and strategies along the
corridor. Mark Ahrendsen, transportation manager for the City's
Department of Public Works, explains why this corridor is important to
Durham and how the study could affect future growth in the area on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."
