Jordan Lake rules hijacked by DOT!
The Jordan Lake Rules were yanked off the Senate floor on Wednesday just when they were at the home stretch. DOT got them removed from a vote by the full Senate in order to try and weaken the part of the rules that reduces nutrient pollution in run-off from existing roads under their jurisdiction. The Haw River Assembly is frustrated that a bill so long in coming, and finally agreed to by the other stakeholders is being held up. Everyone, including DOT needs to do their fair share to clean up Jordan Lake!
HB 239, "Restore Water Quality in Jordan Reservoir" -- the bill that will finally make cleaning
up Jordan Lake a reality, passed the
House and was approved on Tuesday by the Senate Agric./Environment/Natural Resources Committee. As you know, r
epresentatives of upstream and downstream local governments and the agriculture
and environmental community agreed to a compromise bill, including the Haw River Assembly. The compromise lengthens the timeline for nutrient
reductions, but overall keeps strong measures in place for
improving water quality in Jordan Lake –as well as all the streams that flow to
it.
Please - one more time, send a message to your Senator and tell them that the Jordan Lake rules need to be passed now - and that DOT needs to do their fair share to reduce pollution. This time you may wish to send your message to all the Senators in the Haw River/Jordan Lake watershed since their local governments support this bill. Their email addresses are below:
Dear Senator ___________
Jordan Lake is an important resource that provides water for
more than 400,000 people and a popular recreation destination for 1 million
people each year. But currently it violates state and federal water quality
standards because of too much nitrogen and phosphorous from wastewater and
runoff. Local governments in the Jordan Lake watershed - upstream and downstream - and the environmental community have
forged a compromise solution that will clean up the Lake.
Please vote to support the HB 239 in the Senate without further delay and without changes that would
weaken it. Everyone needs to do their fair share to clean up the lake. That includes the pollution that runs off our highways and streets, under DOT's control.
Sincerely,
(your name)
