Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the June 15, 2009 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week." The show will begin
airing on Monday, June 22 at 1:30 p.m. and will also be available to
watch on-demand at www.durhamnc.gov/dtv8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm.

City Council Adopts $345.6 million FY 2009-2010 Budget

* Durham's FY 2009-2010 budget is now in place. The City Council
unanimously approved the $345.6 million spending plan during its June 15
meeting. While the property tax rate will remain the same, at $0.54 per
$100 of assessed value, the 2009-2010 plan reflects a 3.1 percent
decrease from last year's adopted budget. The budget goes into effect
on July 1.

Some of Durham's Struggling Neighborhoods to Benefit From Federal
Recovery Funds

* Millions of dollars in federal housing recovery funds will
soon be working toward stabilizing some of Durham's struggling
neighborhoods. The City will receive $2.1 million through the North
Carolina Department of Commerce to mitigate the effect of foreclosures
in Northeast Central Durham, Southwest Central Durham, Southside, and
the West Geer Street project area. Funding for the Neighborhood
Stabilization Program was authorized by the Housing and Economic
Recovery Act of 2008. Larry Jarvis, assistant director of the City's
Community Development Department, explains how the money will be spent
on the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Federal Recovery Funds Allow City to Address Sidewalk, Trail, and Street
Projects

* Federal recovery funds will soon allow the City to address a
number of high-priority sidewalk, trail, and street projects. Through
the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the City will receive $5
million to manage 18 transportation projects. The City chose the
projects because they meet the federal eligibility requirements and are
either ready to bid, or can be ready to be bid within the next six
months. Mark Ahrendsen, transportation manager for the City's Public
Works Department, explains what types of projects were chosen on the
upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."

Significant Bond-Funded Street Repair Project Set to Begin

* The City Council approved using $4.9 million in 2007 general
obligation bond funds to pay for 41 miles of street repairs. The
project includes pavement repairs, milling, utility adjustments, and
resurfacing for streets in various locations throughout the city. Stay
up-to-date on all street repair projects through the Operation Green
Light home page of the City's Web site at
www.DurhamOperationGreenlight.org.

Other interviews featured on upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week":

* Donald Long, director of the City's Solid Waste Management
Department - Offers more details on important changes in the way the
City's recycling, yard waste, and bulky items will be collected.

* Marcus Bryant, manager of Geographic Information Systems with
the City's Technology Solutions Department - Explains how and why the
City will soon be using a new method of tracking its vehicles.
