[Durham INC] On to the HOUSE: 2nd request for PUBLIC HEARING on SB 700

Please see below. Considering that contamination from a dry cleaning business 2 or 3 decades ago is causing concern in the city of Durham right now, it would seem imprudent (to be polite) for state legislators to REDUCE the required notification period for residents...

We should be able to get more than a 'couple dozen' people to write their elected officials on this issue. Discussion of this issue in the legislature thus far has been horribly one-sided. All we're asking for at this stage is a public hearing -- just let
citizens speak and hopefully listen to them...debate is the foundation
of democracy, afterall.

on SB 700: 

   

Thank you. Thank you. Despite calls and
emails from at least a couple dozen people, the House Environment and Natural Resources
Committee members passed SB 700 - with no changes.  

   

Representative Paul Luebke emailed me to
tell me the committee members saw nothing wrong with SB 700, and it was DENR
who wanted it. Not only was it DENR “who wanted” SB 700 – it was
the dry cleaning businesses, their attorney’s and lobbyists who are
members of the Dry Cleaning Solvent Clean Up Act (DSCA) “stakeholder”
group who wanted it.  

   

To each of you who took the time to write
and call your representatives who are members of the House Environment and Natural
Resources Committee --- please consider re-directing your request for a public hearing on SB 700 to the House Judiciary
III Committee Chair and Vice Chairs, with a special note to Durham
Representative Mickey Michaux, who is a member of the House Judiciary III Committee:

the date when the bill will be heard in committee, I’ll let each of you
know. Please consider joining me in Raleigh 
at the House Judiciary III Committee hearing to request that a public hearing be
held on this bill.  

   

Tell committee
members that SB 700 limits the public’s right-to-know about contaminated
dry cleaning sites in their communities that may affect their health and area natural
resources, and places residents of communites at greater risk of exposure to contamination
from these toxic sites.
