[Durham INC] INC-list Digest, Vol 58, Issue 23

Having just driven back from Watagua Co on Sunday evening, specifically picturesque Blowing Rock, I witnessed one of their 3 electronic billboards. How unsightly, and distracting it was. There on the side of the road, in front of large grey boulders covered with moss, and surrounded by rhododendrons, was a flashing sign advertising the stores located at Boone Mall. I've always been disappointed having to look at the traditional billboards on the side of the road while driving up 321 from Boone to BR. The electronic billboard reminded me of why I spent the weekend in Ashe Co, adjacent to Watagua, an area not full of homogenous housing developments, and overgrown with strip malls.

Let's keep electronic billboards off of Durham's highways. Durham has too much charm and character to be undermined by these distractions.

No new billboards can be legally erected in Watauga County
after the county board of commissioners passed a revision to ban future signs Tuesday night.

The board approved a revision to the sign ordinance that not only precludes any new
traditional billboards, but also prevents the replacement of existing billboards with any new
digital billboards. The three existing digital billboards in the county would remain in place
unless they were either removed or damaged enough to fall out of compliance with the
ordinance.
