Public Meeting Set for Durham's Ellerbe Creek Watershed Improvement
Project
November 19 Meeting to Provide Results of Watershed Evaluation Project
DURHAM, N.C. - Durham residents interested in the two-year project to
restore the health of Ellerbe Creek will get a chance to learn about the
project results and preliminary recommendations at an upcoming meeting
this month.
The City of Durham's Department of Public Works is hosting a public
meeting regarding the Ellerbe Creek Watershed Improvement Project on
Thursday, November 19, 2009, at 6:30 p.m. in Planning Conference Room
GA, located on the Ground Floor of City Hall at 101 City Hall Plaza,
Durham.
This meeting will provide residents and interested stakeholders the
results of the watershed evaluation project and share the preliminary
recommendations for the draft Ellerbe Creek Watershed Management
Implementation Plan. Modeling tools and results that were used to
develop the draft plan will also be demonstrated.
The goals of this project are to revitalize the health of Ellerbe Creek
and to comply with water quality regulations. The project, which began
in December 2007, consisted of field crews assessing streams and
stormwater devices in the Ellerbe Creek watershed and included multiple
public meetings with citizens to shape and prioritize the watershed
restoration.
According to Sandra Wilbur, project manager with the Stormwater Services
Division of the City's Department of Public Works, input by residents
was vital for developing the criteria used for prioritizing this
watershed restoration opportunity. "Since the primary goal of this
project is to revitalize the health of Ellerbe Creek, citizen input in
shaping and prioritizing the project was an important component," Wilbur
said. "This meeting is their chance to see the results of all this work
and to learn about the recommendations we're going to make going forward
to restore the water quality of this creek."
