Fast Facts:
* The Rolling Hills/Southside Steering Committee is hosting a
week-long series of charrettes to gather community design input for the
revitalization efforts of this historic community. The Rolling
Hills/Southside Steering Committee was formed in 2007 and includes more
than 40 community members and City representatives.
* The goal of the Rolling Hills/Southside Steering Committee is
to have a community design plan ready by the end of January that will
encompass 100 acres around Rolling Hills, including the Southside
neighborhood. The $745,000 planning effort, paid for by the City of
Durham, will yield a master plan for a redevelopment that could include
350 or more units of housing and retail space and cost approximately $80
million.
* Resident participation in the charrettes is critical to ensure
community needs are met and consensus is built before proceeding with
the next phase of the master plan, which would establish a mixed-income
residential community with some retail space at affordable and market
rates.
o Moving forward with renewal could also accelerate the redevelopment
of Heritage Square, a shopping center directly across Lakewood Avenue.
It could also expedite the redevelopment of Fayette Place, a 20-acre
former public housing site.
* For more information about this project or next week's
community design charrettes, contact Larry Jarvis, assistant director of
the City's Department of Community Development, at (919) 560-4570, ext.
22273 or via e-mail at larry.jarvis at durhamnc.gov.
