New "City Hall This Week" Begins Tuesday

New Episode Begins Airing Tuesday, December 15 on DTV8; All Previous
Episodes "On Demand" on the City's DTV8 Web Site

 

Durham, N.C. - The following highlights from the December 7, 2009 Durham
City Council meeting and other topics of interest will be featured in
the upcoming episode of "City Hall This Week."  The show will begin
airing on Tuesday, December 15 and will also be available to watch on
demand at www.durhamnc.gov/dtv8/CityHallThisWeek.cfm. 

 

City Council Approves New Partner in Recycling Services

*         The City has a new partner in the recycling services it
provides to the residents of Durham.  The City Council approved a
no-cost /no-risk contract with Sonoco Recycling to receive and process
all recyclable material that is now being collected by City crews.
Solid Waste Director Donald Long explains why this is expected to be a
beneficial partnership for both parties and why the City's new recycling
program is already far-exceeding expectations on the upcoming episode of
"City Hall This Week."

 

Federal Funds to Support Additional Affordable Housing in Durham

*         The ongoing partnership between Habitat for Humanity and the
City will continue to benefit redevelopment efforts in the West End and
Lyon Park communities.  Habitat will spend up to $184,000 in federal
housing funds to buy five properties that will be turned into affordable
housing.  The properties are located at 1009 Rock Street, 1012 and 1107
Moreland Avenue, 1109 Proctor Street, and 616 Carroll Street.  Existing
dilapidated structures on the sites have been or will be demolished and
will be replaced with energy-efficient homes that will be sold to
first-time homebuyers.

 

City Holiday Schedule Reminder

*    Here's a reminder of how the City's schedule will be affected by
the upcoming Christmas holiday.  Most City offices will be closed
Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25.  There will be no changes
to the recycling or garbage collection schedules.  Friday bulky item and
yard waste collections will occur on Monday, December 28.  For more
information on other closings due to the Christmas holiday, visit the
City's Web site or call Durham One Call at 560-1200.

 

New "Census Minute" Debuts

*         Durham Local Census Office Manager Yvonne Sanks explains what
Census jobs are available in Durham and how the "Census Minute" will
become a new monthly feature to appear on DTV8 through May 2010.

*         Fleet Management Director Kent Cash - Explains why Durham's
vehicle fleet is receiving recognition for its "green" efforts and how
those efforts are paying off for Durham every day. 

 

*         Durham Central Park Board of Directors Vice President Michael
Rodgers - Offers an update on park's accomplishments over the past year
and what it hopes to achieve in the year ahead.

 

"City Hall This Week" is a news program dedicated to informing Durham
residents about what is going on inside Durham's City Hall.  Each
edition is taped on the first and third Tuesday of the month - the day
after City Council meetings.  It airs twice a day on DTV8 through the
