The attached ³Organizations to Support² spreadsheet can serve a number of
purposes. An alternative to giving gifts for holidays, birthdays and other
special occasions is to make a contribution to a non-profit organization in
honor of a loved one, family member, friend or co-worker. The list may also
be useful to people who are looking for employment and volunteer
opportunities, networking, groups to be aware of and to donate in-kind items
to. Some groups offer a tax deduction for donations of goods and services
(called in-kind donations).

I believe that making a contribution is especially important right now
during these difficult economic times. No amount of money is too small. You
can make a difference.

Sheet 1 of this spreadsheet is searchable by name, service area (Triangle,
statewide, Southern, national and international), city, state, tax status,
and several other categories.

Sheet 2 includes issues the groups address. The primary topic is in
boldface, with additional issues following. Among them are Human/Civil
Rights, Social/Economic Justice, Peace, Advocacy, Economic Development,
Low-Income, Latino Community, Workers Rights, Education, Environment,
Politics, Youth, Children, Community Resources, Housing, Women¹s Rights,
Families, Health Services, Seniors, Arts/Culture, Environmental Justice,
Energy, Consumers Rights, Land Protection and Water Protection.

These organizations are ones that I, and people I respect, believe in. Let
me know if you want to know which groups are my favorites.

If you would like to do more research you may want to go to American
Institute of Philanthropy; or http://www.justgive.org or
http://www.charitynavigator.org, both of which are great for evaluating and
comparing charitable organizations. The Triangle Community Foundation has
developed a web page called ³Triangle Gives Back²
http://www.trianglegivesback.org/ about organizations and contributing to
groups in general. The Durham People¹s Alliance has put together a Resource
Directory (see http://www.durhampa.org/ <http://www.durhampa.org/> ).

Please circulate the ³Organizations to Support² document. Compiling this
document has been a labor of love. I really appreciate all of you who have
offered your help.

Time is running out for making a donation before the end of the year, so
please take action now. These groups can really use your help.

Laura

P.S. If you would like the entire list that includes Triangle, statewide,
Southern, national and international service areas please let me off of the
list serve.)
